What are Dental Implants?

For a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing replacement of missing teeth, dental implants not only provide a natural-looking smile but also restore function. Precision devices that replace the root of the missing tooth are placed in the jawbone.

Once placed in the jawbone, these precision screws act as a post to replace the tooth. Over a few weeks, the jawbone fuses with the implant and the replacement tooth gets a perfect fit into its position.

Why Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the most effective substitutes for replacing a missing tooth. The form and function of dental implants are so natural that treatment cannot be detected.  Dental implants are low maintenance because they do not need to be removed for cleaning, thereby making it a suitable solution for most patients.

An implant is attached to the jawbone directly and is independent of teeth surrounding it. In cases of any problems with the implant in future, your dentist will easily be able to assess the area and will try to resolve the issue, without the involvement of other healthy teeth.

Advantages of dental implants over alternative treatment options

  • They last longer than dentures and bridges.
  • They help prevent bone loss.
  • They have a more precise fit than bridges or dentures, restoring the patient’s ability to eat hard food.
  • Dental implants help achieve the perfect smile, thereby boosting patient’s self-confidence.
  • They are not age-restrictive and treatment with dental implants can be provided to most of age groups.

How is the treatment carried out?

Dental implant treatments usually take 3 – 6 months from start of the procedure and consists of the following steps:

  • At the start, your damaged tooth is removed. To prevent the accumulation of debris, an implant is placed in the jaw before placing the screw. For 3-6 months, the implant fuses with the jawbone and the gum is secured over the implant.
  • The dentist then uncovers the implant and an extension called a post is attached. After healing of the tissue surrounding the post, the post and implant together act as the foundation for the new tooth.
  • Lastly, a crown will be fabricated with the shade and form that best suits your natural teeth. Following that, the crown is fastened onto the implant post and you can enjoy with the new stunning smile!
